I love waking up early, journaling, listening to worship music, and studying the Bible. It’s great to have a morning routine and stick with it. Though I’m not a natural morning person, I’ve grown to appreciate this time of day. There’s something so beautiful and peaceful about mornings.
But, let’s be honest. Morning routines can be tricky. You might struggle to get up early and stay awake. Some mornings are cold and dark depending on how early you wake up. So, how can you improve and maintain a Christian morning routine and spend time with God without dozing off or falling back asleep? I want to share about tea, my favorite morning drink, and how it helps me to stay awake and focused as I spend time with God in the mornings.

What’s a Christian morning routine and why do we need it?
A Christian morning routine is simply a morning routine for Christians! It usually involves prayer, Bible study, worship music, and journaling. It’s how we take time out of our busy schedules to rest and refuel in God’s presence. It looks different for everyone but that’s the gist of it!
Why do we need a Christian morning routine?
While everyone’s different, I strongly believe in spending time with God first thing in the morning. It’s a practical way to put God first. I personally think mornings are best because there are little distractions, we’re well rested, and we don’t have to worry about the day-to-day challenges of work or school yet. Now, your routine doesn’t have to be in the morning but you should at least have some sort of routine. I recommend trying mornings but if it’s not possible for you, carve out some other time in your day and spend it intentionally with God!

Why tea is the best drink to start your morning with
Why start your morning with tea instead of coffee or some other energy drink? Well, tea stands out as being both calming and energizing. Too much energy too quickly can leave you anxious and unable to focus. However, having a balance of both calming and stimulating properties is just what we need as we spend time with God in the mornings.
Tea contains caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, and l-theanine. I’m sure you know about caffeine since it’s found in tea, coffee, and energy drinks but the other three are more specific to tea. Theophylline, theobromine, and l-theanine can aid with managing our stress, regulating our mood, boosting brain function, and helping us to focus better. This is why tea is the better drink to start your morning with. You’ll have enough energy to stay focused but not too much that you get anxious and scatter-brained.
I always have a cup of tea with me when I sit down to start my morning Bible study. Earlier this year, I’d wake up at 5:15 every morning and I’ll be honest, it was hard. But having a warm cup of tea to sip on was so helpful.

What are the benefits of drinking tea in the morning?
We just spoke about why tea is the best drink to start the morning with. But, I also want to share some of the additional benefits of drinking tea when you wake up.
Besides caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, and l-theanine, tea is also filled with antioxidants and catechins. Antioxidants and catechins are necessary for fighting free radicals in your body. A certain amount of free radicals are important for the body but too much can damage cells and potentially cause cancer, heart, disease, diabetes, and a number of other illnesses. Drinking tea each morning can help to lower your risk of these diseases.
Next, tea can help improve your metabolism. We know that healthy metabolism is essential for keeping us alive. It also helps us to maintain a healthy weight and helps us have consistent energy throughout the day.
We touched on this a bit earlier but tea is also stress relieving. Dealing with stress isn’t just something you should think about at night or on weekends. When we take steps to maintain healthy stress levels early, it prevents us from having to take drastic measures later on.
Finally, and this is my personal favorite: tea is warm and cozy, and smells amazing. I don’t know about you but I love great smelling aromas. Taking in the smell of a delicious herbal tea or a creamy chai tea in the morning just does something for me.

Best teas to drink to wake up in the morning

You can choose from herbal, green, white, or black tea. If you need more caffeine, try black tea and if you want to go caffeine free, try herbal tea. I’m going to recommend an herbal, green, and black tea from Little Prayer Tea Company, a brand I recently got to try. They offer high quality loose leaf tea and I love that their business has a biblical foundation – their teas have bible verses on them!
Ceylon Vanilla Black Tea
The Ceylon Vanilla Black Tea has the highest caffeine content out of the three that I’m sharing. If you need more caffeine in your morning routine, I’d recommend this one! When you first open the container, you’re greeted with a warm and sweet aroma. Once you brew a cup of this tea and take a sip, you’ll experience its rich, creamy, and smooth flavor. It’s also great with oat milk for the perfect latte! You can get the Ceylon Vanilla Black Tea here at their website.
Autumn Chai Tea
I absolutely loved the Autumn Chai Tea. It’s unique because it’s a Chai made from honeybush tea instead of traditional black tea. I have to tell you, it’s so good! I already love honeybush tea but paired with the chai spices, it was incredible. I really appreciated the boldness of the spices paired with the sweetness of the honeybush tea. This one will definitely be a go-to for me.
Honeybush tea is herbal so if you’re wanting to stay away from caffeine, this might be the choice for you! You can get some here.
Green Tea Mango
Finally, the Green Tea Mango has a moderate amount of caffeine. I’m kind of obsessed with mango so this tea quickly became a favorite. While this isn’t a floral tea, if you like florals, you’ll probably also enjoy this. It’s sweet and relaxing. I haven’t tried this iced yet but I’m sure it would be amazing! You can get a tin of this Green Tea Mango here.
Why Little Prayer Tea Co?
If you know me, then you know I’m picky about my tea. Just this month, I’ve bought multiple containers of both looseleaf and tea bag chai’s trying to find the perfect one. I’ve also bought a few Earl Greys trying to find the best one. I love high quality tea and when I come across a brand that offers this, I make note of it.
The first tea I tried from Little Prayer Tea Co was their Autumn Chai and the moment I opened the tin, I could tell that I would enjoy it. They source their tea from the best places and they take care to make sure that the tea you receive tastes amazing.
I also love their brand because of how connected to prayer and scripture it is. I mean, how awesome is it to sit down for morning Bible study with a cup of tea that reminds you of God’s word? How great would it be to brew an afternoon cup and be uplifted by a verse of scripture to help you keep going throughout the rest of the day?
Little Prayer Tea Co isn’t just about tea. It’s about tea and faith, spiritual and physical wellness, and how God uses all of it for his glory and our good.
I hope you enjoyed this article! I don’t know if you can tell but I’m really passionate about tea. I drink it multiple times per day and I definitely start my morning with a warm cup! If you need help improving your Christian morning routine, try adding some of Little Prayer Tea Co’s blends to your morning. Drinking tea won’t fix everything but it certainly will do a lot of good!
Before you go, tell me, what is your favorite part of your morning routine?
I’m currently trying to develop a morning routine. When I did have one my favorite part was doing morning pages! Something about getting all those floating thoughts down on paper. Great post!
Thanks Keila! That’s an awesome idea! It’s great to take time to process all of our thoughts!
Tea lover here, too! I love that it’s a gentle start to the morning and goes well with Bible study.
