I’m sure you know what it’s like to have a million voices in your head telling you one thing or another about who you are. Today’s culture has so much to say about identity. Don’t believe me? Just open social media. But, is it all true? Is any of it true? How can you separate what’s true from what’s false?
You don’t have to accept everything deemed as “true” by the world. Your identity is shaped by the words God himself speaks about you. There is no higher truth than God’s truth. While the narratives of the world may try to pull you in a hundred different directions, his truth provides a firm foundation you can stand on. That being said, here are five empowering truths about your identity in Christ taken straight from God’s word.
You Are Completely Loved (John 3:16)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.John 3:16
First, and foremost, you are completely loved by God, your Father in heaven. There is no reason or rationale to God’s love. He simply loves you because it’s his nature to do so. Many people associate God with wrath and anger, and run away from him because they fear that he’s out to punish them. God isn’t out to punish you. In fact, he went out of his way by sending his son Jesus to die a painful death just to free you from the chains of sin and shame. Know with every fiber of your being that you are loved unconditionally by God.
You Are a Child of God (John 1:12-13)
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.John 1:12-13
When you turned away from sin and decided to follow Jesus, you became a child of God. This means that you belong to God’s family. If fatherlessness or a broken home life defined your identity in the past, once you became God’s daughter, those narratives were broken off of you. You no longer have to struggle with rejection or feelings of being unwanted because now you have a home. No one can take away your seat at the table – it is completely yours.

You Are a New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.2 Corinthians 5:17
You became a new creation when you surrendered your life to Christ. Your past no longer defines you. The old struggles you used to fight no longer define you. The sins that kept you enslaved no longer hold you down. Spiritually, you died to who you were before and now you live with a clean slate before you. (Romans 6:11) This means that you no longer have to live your life the way you used to. Now you are free to live your life for God’s glory.
You Are the Light of The World (Matthew 5:14-17)
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.Matthew 5:14-17
This one comes with some responsibility. As a child of God, you are called to shine the light he placed within you into this dark world. (1 Peter 2:9) We are the only light in the world that can point people to Jesus. No one comes to God except he first draws them, and the truth is, God often uses us as vessels to draw people to himself. (John 6:44) Your identity in Christ is never a license to sit back and do nothing. In fact, knowing who you are in Christ activates and empowers you to take a stand for God in the world.
You Are Powerful (2 Corinthians 4:7; Luke 10:19)
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;2 Corinthians 4:7
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.Luke 10:19
When the enemy attacks our identity, one of the things he’s really trying to attack most is our power. If he can get you to doubt who you are, then you’ll forfeit the power God has given you over him. But, I want you to know that God has given you power and authority over the enemy. It took me a long time to really get this but once I did, it changed the entire game. I realized how strong I was in Christ. I found out that nothing the enemy threw at me could stop me from living my life as God intended me to. Ultimately, I realized I was truly free. So are you. This power is not just for “certain” people. It’s for everyone who chooses to walk with Jesus.
