I love a good face mask. It’s the perfect way to revive your skin after a long work week. While I enjoy shopping around for fun, new masks to try, I really love coming up with my own DIY recipes. I just love the thrill of opening my kitchen or bathroom cabinet, discovering new ingredients, and putting them together to make the ultimate face mask. Plus, I love that DIY face masks are much cheaper than any I can find while I’m out shopping. If that’s not a good enough reason, I love DIY face masks because they allow me to feel confident that I’m only putting good, organic ingredients on my skin.
Last summer, I discovered a DIY Turmeric and Bentonite Clay face mask and I’ve been in love ever since. It has so many wonderful benefits but what stands out the most is how my skin feels after using it. When I wash the mask off, my skin appears instantly brighter. It’s crazy how it transforms my skin from looking dull and tired to hydrated and glowing in a matter of minutes.
If you are interested in learning more about this mask, I’d love to highlight a few of its benefits and show you how to make it.
Though it features turmeric and Bentonite clay, it also includes a few other ingredients that will help to increase the effectiveness of the mask. Before I go into the ingredients, I’ll walk you through the skincare benefits of Turmeric and Bentonite Clay.

What is turmeric?
Well, Turmeric is a spice that comes from a plant commonly found throughout India, Asia, and Central America. It’s used to cure many health conditions including joint pain, breathing problems, arthritis, and fatigue. Along with turmeric’s many health benefits, it’s a powerful ingredient that can be found in many natural skincare products. With continued use, Turmeric promotes clear, healthy, and glowing skin. Here is a list featuring some of the skincare benefits of turmeric.

Turmeric Skincare Benefits
- Reduces dark spots and under eye circles
- Cures inflammation, which is often the cause of redness, acne, and puffiness
- Lightens hyperpigmentation and promotes an even skin tone

What is Bentonite Clay?
Calcium Bentonite Clay is a very absorbent clay that usually forms after volcanic ash ages. Since Bentonite Clay has positively charged ions, it has the power to pull negatively charged toxins right out of your skin. As a result, Bentonite Clay is great for detoxifying your skin of harmful chemicals that you might become exposed to after going out and about during the week. Here’s a list of some featured benefits of Bentonite Clay.

Bentonite Clay Skincare Benefits
- Naturally exfoliates skin, removing dirt, oil, and dead skin cells
- Draws harmful toxins out of your skin
- Heals acne
- Softens skin
- Unclogs and shrinks pores
This mask also includes Apple Cider Vinegar. Apple Cider Vinegar is simply a type of vinegar made from fermented apple juice. It has many health benefits including aiding weight loss, treating sore throat, and improving heart health. Apple Cider Vinegar is included in this mask recipe because it helps to strengthen the effects of the Bentonite Clay and Turmeric on your skin. But, it also has its own skincare benefits that can do wonders for your skin. See them here.

Here’s how you make it
- 1 tbsp Bentonite Clay
- ½ tsp Turmeric
- 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 tsp Coconut (or Olive Oil)
- Optional: Water
Although I shared specific measurements, don’t worry about getting them perfect. As long as you have about one part Turmeric, two parts Bentonite Clay, and enough Apple Cider Vinegar to create a yogurt-like consistency, you should be fine. Just make sure that you don’t mix your mask with a metal spoon. Metal activates the Bentonite Clay prematurely and by the time it gets on your skin, it may lose most of its detoxifying properties. I would also recommend using gloves for this mask as the turmeric can stain your hands. If you don’t have gloves, no worries, the stain should go away in a few days.

After mixing all of your ingredients, apply a thin layer to your face. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend starting off with 10 minutes. Once your mask is dry (or mostly dry) wipe it off with a damp, warm cloth and then wash the rest off with water. You might notice that your skin is a little red after removing your mask. Don’t worry, the redness is completely normal. It just means that the Bentonite Clay is doing its job. It should go away in about an hour.

After you remove your mask, be sure to follow up with a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. If you have leftovers, just store it in the fridge. You can re-use leftovers up to one week. I recommend using this mask once every few weeks to keep your skin nourished, healthy, and glowing.

I haven’t made this mask yet but why are we using gloves to protect our hands to put it on our FACE? If it stains our hands won’t it stain our face?
Hi Hazel! I suggested wearing gloves particularly for finger nails. I find that it lasts on your nails for a while. It will “stain” your face for a little bit but it goes away very quickly. I’d recommend doing this mask in the evening. The time between then and the next day should be enough for it to wear off. Definitely test it first – I have dark skin so it doesn’t affect me as much but if your skin is lighter, it might stay on a little longer.
This is my favorite DIY face mask. It is very effective answer the results are instant. I occasionally alternate the ACV with rose water or Greek yoghurt. This is a 10/10 for me.
Amazing mask! My skin feels so soft. Even my husband tried and loved it. I used a brush to apply and had no staining on my hands or face. I will be using it once a week!
