Deep down, we all want to understand who we are and how we should relate to the world. We’re starting to realize just how important this one concept is for shaping the way we live our lives. While I love the many wonderful conversations people are having about identity, I think we need more Bible based discussions. If we’re ever going to understand who we are, we need to have a firm grasp on our identity in Christ. The Bible tells us so much about who we are in God’s eyes and I believe that if we started living according to God’s thoughts about us, we would live much fuller lives.

“Identity cannot be found or fabricated but emerges from within when one has the courage to let go.”
Doug Cooper
When we live our lives based on God’s truth, it empowers, frees us, and makes us whole and complete. For too long, we’ve embraced subtle lies about our core identity, allowing them to limit us, imprison us, and rob us of all God has for us. But, we don’t have to live that way anymore. We can know God’s truth and the truth can set us free. That being said, enjoy this list of my favorite Bible verses about our identity in Christ. It’s broken up into sections covering five key themes scripture often speaks about in tangent with our identity in Christ.
25 Bible Verses About Your Identity in Christ
Adoption
We have been adopted into God’s family. As adopted children of God, we inherited certain rights, privileges, and even responsibilities when we accepted Jesus. We are no longer orphans, we belong to God. That’s a huge part of our identity in Christ.

- He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will. – Ephesians 1:5
Freedom
We are free in Christ. That’s another important part of our identity. We are no longer defined by what used to enslave us. Once we chose Jesus, we became free. The problem is, many Christians still live in slavery because deep down they think the freedom they have in Christ is too good to be true. But, if Christ set you free, you are free.
- Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. – 2 Corinthians 3:17
- For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. – Galatians 5:1

- So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. – John 8:36
- In whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. – Ephesians 3:12
